Proteas win over shadows Gayle force

The Proteas started their World Cup campaign on a high after beating the Windies with 8 wickets and 14 balls to spare. Herschelle Gibbs got South Africa out of jail after poor bowling from South Africa and a brilliant T20 record of 117 of 57 balls by Chris Gayle. The Windies was absolutely poor in the field which allowed the Proteas back in the game. Gibbs scored a gutsy 90 runs and Kemp a slow but effective 46 runs to take the Proteas home. West India made 206 runs in their 20 overs and South Africa reach the target with 14 balls to spare.

Although we've started the tournament with a bang, a point of concern are the lack of variety in the bowling department, a persistent problem which probably cost us the tournament in the Caribbean earlier this year. But as a true South African supporter we'll take the win and hope the bowlers can come to the party. As a cricket supporter - Chris Gayle you beauty what an excellent innings.

Ponting ICC Cricketer of the year

Australian captain Ricky Ponting has been named international cricketer of the year for the second successive year. Mohammad Yousuf of Pakistan was named Test player of the year and yet another Aussie, Matthew Hayden ODI cricketer of the year.

Smith & Gibbs duo awaits the Windies

Less than 24 hours to go to the first ever Twenty 20 cricket world cup. The "old" combination opening partnership of Gibbs and Smith proved to much for Australia in their warm up clash on Sunday. Although Loots Bosman will be missed, the prospect of Gibbs and Smith batting the world on fire once again excites everyone except of course Australia and the rest of the world.

The proceedings will be under way on Tuesday 17:30. South Africa will take on the "hot and cold" West Indies team. Watch this space for news, scores, gossip and tournament updates.

Six days to go

Only six days to go to the first ever Twenty 20 world cup. Feel free to add your comments, predictions and suggestions on how we are going to "clap" the Aussies this time around. Sadly this time around we'll have to do without the likes of Kallis, Bosman and Hall.

Can we do it? Can we win the rugby world cup and the Twenty 20 world cup in one year? We'll have to see and man is there plenty to see.

Loots has got an outstanding record in this form of cricket and a replacement will be announced soon.
